Teaching Grandma and Grandpa use the computer and the internet can be such a big disaster. We have collected a few tested ideas which will help you as you walk them along the complicated advancements in technology.
1
Walk them through the basics of the PC. There will always be the fat chance that Grandma and Grandpa did not get the chance to even lay their hands on a keyboard. Start with the basics. How does a PC work? How does it differ from a typewriter. It is very important that you discuss with them first the basic features of a PC then that's the time you proceed to discussing the works of the internet.
2
Use the mouse. Using the mouse can sometimes be easier and less complicated than teaching Grandma and Grandpa to use a wide range of keyboard shortcuts.
3
Practice typing. It's time you give their hands and fingers a little exercise. Practice typing. Start with a sentence or two. Make sure you use bigger fonts to keep everything visible and to keep it easier for the both of you.
4
Explain how the internet works. Now, it's time you explain to them how the world wide web works. What can it do? How does it benefit people's lives and the world at large. You can also ask them to check out some useful sites like Yahoo News and the like to give them a clear scenario how the net really works.
5
Practice them as often as possible. As the cliché goes, “Practice makes perfect.” When they're not doing anything, you can ask them to join you as you chat online with a relative from another part of the globe. Then, you can ask them to give it a try themselves after a few while. This way, they will begin to understand the real essence of a computer and the internet.
