If there is no dice around, what can you do to decide who goes first in a game at the same time as keeping it fair to everyone? It’s not fair to say a rhyme when there’s the possibility that the person who says it has worked out who will win, or to have a race of some sort when not everyone in the group is equally fast or talented. The only thing that’s fair is to rely on luck. Here is one example of relying on luck to decide who goes first in a game.
1
Put equal sizes of little bits of paper into a large bag or packet. One piece of paper will have the words “start the game” on it.
2
Let everyone put their hands into the bag or packet AT THE SAME TIME, keeping their hands perfectly still until you give the go ahead. If anyone tries to start feeling around before you give the go ahead, they will all be aware of it because of so many hands in one small place and at least one will call out “Hey, that’s not fair!” This guarantees that eventually they will all wait for you to give the go ahead, before starting to grip a piece of paper.
3
The one who has the correct piece of paper obviously gets to start the game, or can nominate somebody else to be the starter.
