Walking on stilts is great fun, and doesn't it look so easy? Hm, a bit tough to do at first, but it CAN be easy. First, however, you have to get onto those stilts!
1
You will first need a pair of stilts. Most stilts have footrests between 15 and 24” from the ground, so we will assume these are what you have.
2
Take one stilt in each hand, and put them in front of you, at an angle, stretching out ahead of you, with the far end on the ground.
3
If the footrests are away from you, rotate the stilts so that the footrests are on the inside.
4
Put one foot on its footrest, and extend your leg. Now move the hand on that side as close to the foot as you can, without bending at the waist.
5
Repeat the previous point with the other foot.
6
Place the bottoms of the stilts on the ground and step up close to the stilts.
7
You want your hands on the inside of the stilt uprights, so that the stilts will be behind your arms when you are up.
8
Lift your best foot and put it onto the footrest. Your foot should be positioned with your weight just behind the ball of your foot.
9
Get up close to the stilts.
10
Kick off with the leg that is still on the ground, to get that foot onto its footrest.
11
Your hands may be a little low, lift them slightly to about waist height.
12
You will over balance, DO NOT bend at the waist to compensate, you will fall off; rather take a little step in the direction you feel you are falling.
13
It may take about 12 to 15 attempts to get up without falling right off. Just keep practicing.
