Many children do not enjoy reading old fashioned paper paged books. Try to stimulate an interest in reading by staging a reading marathon. Select books that have approximately the same number of pages. Try to tailor the books to the particular child’s interests.
1
Task the ‘competitors’ to read the first 5 pages, the winner gets a piece of candy.
2
When all the competitors report back, ask how the story is going, get some feedback. Don’t reward the child who was obviously not reading, or has very little idea of what the story is about. Reward ALL the children who do.
3
For the next ‘heat’, 10 pages is the target. Do the same at the end of the 10 pages, and repeat the process, pushing the number of pages up by 5 every time.
4
By halfway, even the laggards will be able to tell you what is happening, as long as you have applied the reward system correctly.
