What to consider before getting lonely Grandma a furry companion.
1
Include grandma in the decision. A pet should never be a surprise gift, unless you are CERTAIN of exactly what she wants.
2
Decide who will care for the pet if grandma is no longer capable - or no longer around.
3
Consider grandma's physical capabilities, time, and financial resources. A dog that is too large or too energetic may cause more stress than comfort. A dog that needs frequent grooming may be too much, unless grandma can afford the monthly bill at the groomer's.
4
Decide if grandma can train and raise a puppy or if an adult dog would be best. A puppy that has to be frequently walked and cleaned up after won't suit grandma if bending over and walking is a problem for her. Don't get a senior dog if its death in a couple of years would cause grandma grief.
5
Let grandma meet the dog, walk the dog, and get to know the dog awhile, before you have to make that long term commitment.
Visit the dog at the store or breeder's or ask the rescue organization what their policy is if the dog doesn't work out.
