How to remove the grossest parasite EVER!

You notice a small, open hole on the neck (typically) of your dog or cat. It appears to be oozing. (Creeps start)

You decide whether to take your pet to the Veterinarian or to forge ahead with home treatment.

Take a deep breath and decide if the sight of a parasitic larvae burrowing and growing under your pet's skin is likely to give you a terminal case of "the willies".

Decide that you can handle it and that there is definitely a burrow under your pet's skin that is oozy and gross, then go get your tweezers and some petroleum jelly (not oil).

Smear a big glob of petroleum jelly over the hole; covering it completely.
This hole is the airhole for the larvae of the botfly. The botfly is a short-lived bug that lays eggs that attach to animal fur and hatch to burrow under the animal's skin and grow. The hole will be round with smooth edges and there is usually no blood or scab, but puss or serum instead. (Now some major creepy-crawliness could be starting to become a full-blown case of willies.)

Get ready with your tweezers and watch carefully for the larvae to rear its hideous head. Within a few seconds it should try to emerge from the hole and get past the glob of jelly.

Get rid of that disgusting thing, bathe your pet, and treat the wound with a flush of betadine solution or peroxide.
Continue to monitor your pet until it heals.
