It is possible to keep those nails trimmed without too much stress to you and your dog.
1
Get your dog used to having its paws handled and manipulated. Many dogs are very sensitive about their feet. If you just grab a foot and start trying to wack away, you may get bitten- even by your sweet little "Fluffy-Poo".
2
Find a comfortable place for you and your dog and settle down with the right tools and a supply of patience. You'll need nail trimmers (designed for dogs), good lighting, and possibly a styptic pencil or powder. A styptic pencil or powder (like Quik Stop) is used to quickly stop minor bleeding and can usually be found at a drugstore or order online.
3
Sit beside your dog or with dog in your lap. Lift a paw and gently squeeze a toe between your forefinger and thumb to both extend the nail and get a firm hold. Don't squeeze too hard!
4
If the nail is white, you should be able to see the pink quick or blood supply in the nail. Cut well in front of this so you won't cause bleeding and hurt the dog. If the nail is black, look for the tapering of the nail at the end and carefully trim a little at a time. Only cut the tapered end.
5
If you should nick your dog, hold the foot firmly (unless the dog is trying to bite you) and use the styptic powder or pencil to stop the bleeding. Press the pencil or a pinch of the powder to the end of the nail until the bleeding stops. Do not allow your dog to run around until you are sure the bleeding has stopped.
6
Continue slowly and carefully and things should go more smoothly with each trimming session.
