Your aquarium fish have little white spots on their fins! What do you do?
1
When you notice ick or little white spots on your aquarium fish, usually on their fins first, you should first clean the tank and gravel. Ick is a protozoa that reproduces by spores and then attaches to fish for a portion of its life cycle. It can spread and be fatal.
2
Purchase a medication for treating ick at a local pet store where they can advise you on the best treatment for your tank.
3
Read and follow the directions for the medication carefully and continue to treat for the entire recommended number of days. Medications that claim to kill ick fast often don't kill the entire life cycle and may lead to repeat treatments.
4
Raise the temperature in your tank to the highest recommended temperature for your fish. Ick's life cycle is shorter in warmer temperatures and this may make the treatment more effective.
5
After getting rid of the ick, you may want to treat your tank with Stress Zyme, or similar product, when you change water or add fish. This helps fish resist infestation of disease caused by stress.
