Rats and mice have natural gnawing and tunneling behaviors that should be indulged. They will be very unhappy and unentertaining pets if left to sit in a wire cage with nothing to do. Most pet shops don't carry toys specifically for small rodents and what they do have is often quite expensive and not really that fun.
1
Save clean, empty toilet paper and paper towel tubes for your pets. The love to chew on, climb in and on, and push around these tubes.
2
Buy inexpensive hard-plastic cat toys in the discount store pet section. Small balls that can rolled around are fun for rats. Make sure it is not rubber or a soft plastic that they can chew up.
3
Provide clean, unbleached paper or black and white newspapers for rats and mice to shred and make into bedding. My rats LOVE to shred paper.
4
House your rats and mice in a tank or in a cage with a deep tray on the bottom. You can then provide a couple of inches of bedding in the bottom for tunneling. Mice love to tunnel and Mommy-rats like to hide their babies in tunnels and under piles of soft bedding.
5
Take your rats and mice out each day and let them ride on your shoulder. Rats especially can learn to love this trick. With mice, keep the ride short as they are more likely to start dropping pellets!
