A hamster is very cute and cuddly looking, but they can be rather grumpy and inflict a nasty bite. Sometimes a hamster brought home from the pet store proves to be rather untamed and difficult to handle.
1
Allow your new pet time to settle in to its new home and environment for a day or so before attempting to make friends.
2
Approach the hamster's cage or home slowly and quietly in the evening after it has awakened on its own. Keep in mind that hamsters are naturally nocturnal.
3
Open the cage and sit nearby. Allow the hamster to move in your direction. Don't let it out of the cage or tank.
4
Offer the hamster a small treat from your hand. Hold it out within reach but let the hamster approach to take it from you.
A raisin, nut, or small piece of muffin might entice it.

If the hamster responds well, you may proceed with careful attempts to touch it gently or lay your hand down, palm up and see it will explore your hand. It is probably best not to try and pick it up too soon.
6
When the hamster is used to you, maybe after feeding it from your hand several times over a few evenings, carefully pick it up. Keep it safely over a surface in case it should jump or startle and fall.
7
Be kind and gentle with your hamster and it will learn to trust you.
