A game of fetch can be fun and exercise for you and your dog.
1
First your dog must be taught to respond and come to you when called.
2
Introduce your dog to one ball or toy with which you will play fetch. Don't let the dog possess the toy too much. It is YOUR toy. It is best to keep this as a special toy reserved for fetch.
3
Show the toy to the dog and then throw the ball a short distance and give the command: "fetch".
4
If the dog gets the toy, praise the dog and cheerfully give the command to "bring it!", then call him back to you.
5
If he brings the toy back to you, gently take it (don't get in a game of tug) and praise and pet your dog.
Repeat.
6
When the dog drops the toy on his return, go get the toy and show it to the dog, holding up to his muzzle and saying, "Bring it."
7
Keep practicing, be consistent with commands and praise until the dog catches on to the game. If the dog has trouble catching on, you may try using a friend to lead the dog to the toy, allow the dog to pick it up, and walk the dog back to you. You say the commands and praise the dog when you take the toy back.
