Choosing the right food for your cat can prevent future health problems and Vet bills.
1
Look for the basic ingredients needed in a cat's diet. Cats are carnivores and do not need carbohydrates. Your cat's food should first contain protein from meat sources, fats, vitamins and minerals, and taurine. Taurine is an enzyme critical to a cat's health.
2
Look at the carbohydrates listed. These aren't a necessary part of your cat's diet but are usually used to hold food together or as filler.
Try to avoid corn products especially.
3
In canned foods, compared the percentage of protein against the water content to determine quality.
4
Give your cat some variety of foods to ensure good nutrition, hydration, and to possibly help avoid food allergies and finicky behavior. A readily available dry food supplemented once a day or a few times a week with a quality canned food is good.
