How should your dog look and when is it time to increase the exercise and cut back on the treats?
1
Check for a belly. Most breeds should have a discernable "waist". The abdomen should not be wider than the chest or hips and a dog should not have a pot belly.
2
Run your hands along your dog's sides. You should be able to feel the ribs. If there is enough fat to give your dog smooth sides with no discernable ribs, he is probably too fat.
3
Consider that if your dog does not get at least a half hour of vigorous exercise or yard time each day, he is probably overweight and unhealthy.
4
If your dog has difficulty running, shows little or no interest in exercise, and has a bulge of fat at the base of its tail and rolls around its neck, it is definitely time to get with your Veterinarian or trainer and start a diet and exercise program! - Unless you don't want your dog around for much longer.
